St. Lucia Prepares for CARIFESTA

THE work of the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) includes providing avenues which nurture, support and develop artistic expression within the cultural and creative sectors of our society. Consequently, CDF is in the preliminary stages of planning for CARIFESTA XIII, a responsibility bestowed upon the organization by Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, Empowerment, Youth Development, Sports, Culture and Local Government.

SILVER Shadow Performing Arts Academy in celebration of its 25th Anniversary is contributing to this year’s Nobel Laureate Festival, with an evening of dance. They will present ‘La Luna – Tales by Moonlight’ on February 3 and 4, at the National Cultural Centre. The production will consist of three showings as follows: a matinee show for Primary and Secondary Schools starting at 1:00 p.m. on February 3 and Opening Night at 8:00 p.m. then the Grand Finale on February 4 at 8:00 p.m

VAT Reduction Looms

ST LUCIANS are preparing to capitalise on the promised reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT), with a government statement Thursday encouraging business owners to ensure that the adjustment takes effect from midnight January 31. Comptroller of the Inland Revenue Department Sophia Henry also urged consumers to remain vigilant and review their VAT invoices and sales receipts when transacting with VAT registered businesses.

WITHIN the past ten years, smartphone sales accounted for the majority of cameras sold worldwide, meaning that we mostly carry a digital camera as part of our smartphone, instead of carrying a standalone camera. The company, Kodak, a pioneer and heavyweight in the camera industry for more than 100 years, fended off bankruptcy in 2013 to emerge as a much smaller company. Despite inventing the digital camera, Kodak didn’t capitalise on that technology.

World Cup Hopes for Caribbean Teams Boosted, But It’s No Guarantee Says C.F.U. President

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Caribbean Football Union president, Gordon Derrick, believes the decision to expand the World Cup to 48 teams will augur well for regional sides but has warned this does not represent “a guarantee” of a spot at the showpiece. Football’s world governing body, FIFA, unanimously voted on the move a week ago, which will see the number of teams at the tournament rise from 32 to 48, and the number of games leap from 64 to 80.

St. Lucia Ranked #21 In World Netball

THE International Netball Federation has updated its rankings to reflect matches played between October 23 and December 11, 2016, including matches from the Test series between England and Jamaica and the Test Series between Saint Lucia and Saint Martin. Following these activities, there is no change to the ranking for the top ten teams. However, Jamaica (4th) draws closer to England (3rd) as a result of their 2-1 series win.

Ethics Code for Regional NGOs

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Caribbean non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are being encouraged to sign onto a code of conduct and ethics that will guide the future operations of NGOs in the region. A senior official of the Barbados-based Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC), which is implementing a three year project aimed at improving civil society effectiveness in regional development and integration processes in the Caribbean Forum (CARICOM), said that the code is to provide a transparent format where NGOs can report to donor, state, membership and the wider general public.
