Virat Kohli, the star of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), celebrated their first title in 18 years alongside former teammates AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle.
For Kohli, winning IPL 2025 was made even more special by the presence of de Villiers and Gayle. The trio, dubbed RCB’s holy trinity when they played together, couldn’t hold back their emotions as they revelled in the afterglow of a maiden IPL triumph, beating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs in Ahmedabad.
As the three got together for a quick chat with the broadcasters, they belted out a new version of the old RCB chant. From ‘Ee sala cup namde’ (this time the cup will be ours) to “Ee sala, cup namdu!” (This time this cup is ours).”
Reflecting on the victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS), Kohli emphasized their shared journey and the emotional significance of the win.
Kohli expressed, “De Villiers deserves this moment just as much as we do. His impact on RCB, the league, and my life is immeasurable. He’s a legend of this franchise, and lifting the trophy together made it even more special.”
As the final overs unfolded, the sight of de Villiers at the boundary heightened Kohli’s emotions: “Watching AB there was special. I was overwhelmed, and they understand that feeling.”
Dressed in a red turban [in support of PBKS] and RCB’s jersey, Gayle hugged Kohli, speaking of the disbelief that an 18-year jinx had finally been broken. “Eighteen years, man,” Gayle said with a big smile. “What a lucky number, man. You know what? I’m happy for you, man. And I am for you. And I’m happy for the franchise.”
Kohli reiterated their shared legacy: “We poured our prime years into this franchise, striving for victory. This title feels even more meaningful because of the bond we share. They deserve this win as much as I do.”
