Saint Lucia is actively enhancing its renewable energy resources, aiming to increase productivity and affordability for its citizens.
Minister of Physical Development and Public Utilities, Keithson Charles, highlighted the urgent need to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, framing it as a matter of national security and economic independence, beyond mere environmental policy.
Charles proposed a “revolutionary” resolution to zero-rate the VAT on solar panels, batteries, inverters, and installation services for the next five years.
“We are giving the power back to the people—both literally and figuratively,” declared Charles as he addressed legislators in Parliament on Wednesday.
He reiterated his commitment to advancing a clean, affordable energy mix while engaging with the hospitality industry during his presentation.
“We are creating a supportive environment to protect our country from global price volatility,” he stated. “This isn’t just about green energy; we are reducing the tax burden on those looking to make the switch.”
With external pressures affecting the livelihoods of Saint Lucians, Charles noted that dependence on imported oil leaves citizens vulnerable to fluctuations in global prices.
“As long as we rely entirely on imported oil, our electricity bills will always be at the mercy of global crises,” he said.
By removing certain taxes, he emphasized that it will become more affordable for families and businesses to install solar energy systems, while simultaneously creating abundant opportunities for local electricians and technicians involved in installations.
“Less taxes, cheaper energy, a greener Saint Lucia—this is what true delivery looks like,” he asserted.
These initiatives mark a significant step forward in Saint Lucia’s commitment to sustainable energy development, ultimately aiming to benefit both the economy and the environment.
