THE semifinalists of the 2016-2017 Veterans/FLOW Plate Football Championships have been decided following last weekend’s quarterfinals at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort when 23 goals were scored. Vieux Fort South got things underway with a clinical 4-0 win over Behind the College All Stars. In a battle of former champions, it was the home team that looked better from the start, getting two goals in both halves coming from the boots of Ernie Soudatt (28th. minute), Daymon Phillip (32nd. minute), Nicholas Marcellin with a beautiful bicycle shoot in the 58th. minute) and Elsberg Vital (72nd. minute) respectively.

Chastanet Promises ‘Exciting Year’

PRIME Minister Allen Chastanet says his government has an “exciting agenda” for the country this new year. The Prime Minister, also the Minister for Finance, Economic Growth, Job Creation, External Affairs and the Public Service, met with the local media at the studios of the Government Information Service last Thursday and took questions on a variety of issues affecting Saint Lucia.

UK Minister To Visit Here

BARONESS Anelay, the Foreign Office Minister for the Overseas Territories and Caribbean is visiting the region to further strengthen the UK’s links with the Caribbean. The Minister will travel for the first time to Anguilla, St Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia from 8-12 January on a visit that will focus on economic development, security and justice reform, climate change and tourism. This follows the Minister’s visit to the Cayman Islands, Barbados and Jamaica in October and His Royal Highness Prince Harry’s recent tour of the wider region.

ORGANIZERS of one of Saint Lucia’s most-talked-about football tournaments are set to launch the highly-anticipated Vizions Entertainment Super League Knockout Tournament on January 30. The $100,000-plus launch will be attended by a number of stakeholders/sponsors, including the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA), which has again sanctioned the tournament, as well as representatives from the various teams who will be anxiously waiting to hear which team they will play and where the main draw is held.

World ARC Sets Off Here Today

TWENTY six boats will set sail from Rodney Bay today for Santa Marta on the first leg of this year’s World ARC. The crossing is expected to be quick as the boats will take around five days to reach Marina Santa Marta. Officials from World Cruising Club, government, representatives from the Saint Lucia Tourist Board and members of the media will be on Reel Extreme to witness the official start of the event.

In his book, The Post-American World, Fareed Zakaria predicts the decline of the West and the Rise of the Rest. I GREW-UP in the Faux-a-Chaud part of Hospital Road in Castries seeing Dwight Venner walking up and down the main road, to and from his family’s home, to town and from school (Saint Mary’s College). Much younger than him, I attended the Methodist Primary and RC (Roman Catholic) Boys schools in Castries — and knew more about his father than about the usually lone but friendly young ‘College Boy’ with all those thick school books.

ON January 1, “60 minutes”, an investigative programme aired by the US television company, CBS Corporation, ran a segment on “Citizenship by Investment Programmes” (CIP) that are operated by several countries around the world. For reasons best known to itself, “60 minutes” focused on three Caribbean islands after paying merely a passing glance at Malta, a Mediterranean island that is part of the 28-nation European Union (EU). It let pass other countries in Europe and North America that also operate such programmes.

Nearly twenty years ago Gypsy spoke to us eloquently of the growing scourges of drug addiction, prostitution, teenage pregnancy and the increasing incidence of the rape of women in his homeland, Trinidad & Tobago, and pointed to the reason for this. According to him that reason was: “Politics for one and politicians for the other.” Nobody listened, and today we know the result – those scourges now threaten to overwhelm Trinidadian society.
