On Thursday, the Ministry for Youth Development and Sports confidently presented 20 racing bicycles to the Saint Lucia Cycling Association (SLCA), a decisive move to enhance cycling development in the country.

The presentation ceremony at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex was a pivotal gathering of key figures in Saint Lucia’s sporting community. Notable attendees included Minister for Youth Development and Sports, Kenson Casimir; newly appointed Sports Director, Clivus Jules; Permanent Secretary, Dr. Uralise Delaire; and SLCA President, Cyril Mangal.

Also present were 1st Vice President Kevin Ross, General Secretary Princess Glasglow, Cycling Coach Leo Serieux, and members of the Ministry’s Communications Unit.

SLCA President Cyril Mangal hailed the donation as a critical boost to youth development: “It is imperative for cycling to grow; we must start training at an early age. With support from the International Cycling Union (ICU), we’ve launched essential skills programs for young cyclists across both the north and south of the island.”

“These bikes have arrived at the perfect moment, allowing us to introduce youth to cycling and establish a strong foundation,” he firmly stated.

Training sessions are already in full swing at St. Jude’s Hospital / George Odlum Stadium in the south and the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in the north, occurring every Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Mangal expressed his gratitude to the Ministry, the ICU, local coaches, and the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee for their unwavering support.

Minister Casimir asserted the Ministry’s commitment to cycling, distinctly backed by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, and emphasized a broader vision for sports development. He recalled his recent discussions with PM Pierre regarding cycling in Saint Lucia and the critical Velodrome project.

Moreover, he stated, “When we discuss sports development, we acknowledge the traditional powerhouses like cricket, football, and track and field. However, let me be clear: the Ministry is resolute in its support for all sports.”

Casimir commended the SLCA’s grassroots approach and its concentrated efforts on school programs, which he deemed essential for long-term success. He expressed satisfaction with the attendance of “so many young people” at the presentation.

“We understand that sports development begins at the grassroots and school levels; this is the foundation of any sports development, so I am proud that the SLCA insists on implementing a comprehensive school program for cycling in Saint Lucia,” the minister emphasized.

While celebrating the donation of bikes to the SLCA, he urged them to maximize their utilization.

Addressing the aspiring young cyclists, Casimir motivated them: “If you are interested, commit fully to your sport. Dedicate time to practice, research, and learn—whether through reading or watching YouTube videos. Invest serious effort into your development, as your coaches and those around you will support and encourage you.”
