Saint Lucia’s rising cycling star, Denver Alphonse Jr., is gearing up for a significant global event later this month.

The 19-year-old reigning national champion is set to compete at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, from September 20 to 27.

This summer has been particularly active for the Saint Lucia Cycling Association (SLCA), which is focused on youth development while the nation’s top cyclist undergoes elite training ahead of the World Championships.

Alphonse Jr., hailing from La Caye, Dennery, is currently training at the UCI Continental Development Satellite Centre in Bromont, Canada, as part of a six-week training program. In June, he captured both the national road race and individual time trial titles, further solidifying his position in the sport.

Earlier this year, while riding for ASC Karaïbes Culture Sports (KCS), he earned a podium spot in the Under-23 category at the Grand Prix Mill€co in Martinique and represented Saint Lucia at the Pan American Championships in Colombia.

Notably, Alphonse Jr. competed at the 2025 World Championships in Rwanda, becoming the first Saint Lucian cyclist to have his national jersey displayed at the KOERS Museum of Cycling in Belgium.

In Bromont, Alphonse trains alongside French cyclist Benjamin Payen, with both riders being coached by Alex Noreskal.

On the home front, the SLCA recently concluded a one-week youth cycling summer camp in Vieux Fort, where 20 children from Plain View Combined School, Vieux Fort Primary, and Augier Combined benefited from coaching by Leo Serieux. The young riders learned about cycling theory, nutrition, physiology, road safety, and race preparation.

Certificates were presented to participants by Danny Butcher, MP for Vieux Fort South.

As Alphonse Jr. prepares to represent Saint Lucia on the world stage, the nation looks forward to his performance at the UCI Road World Championships.
