Young Saint Lucian star cyclist Denver Alphonse Jr. is currently making waves in Canada as he prepares for the prestigious Tour de l’Abitibi, the only world-class road race in North America.

Having just turned 18 on Monday, Alphonse is training in Quebec with the Liftow-Kitchener Waterloo Cycling Academy under the guidance of coach Robert Good.

Since his arrival, he has been logging impressive daily distances of up to 70 kilometers in preparation for the demanding seven-stage race, which will cover 684.7 kilometers over six consecutive days, starting on Tuesday, July 15.

The Tour de l’Abitibi, the only junior-level race on the continent and sponsored by the International Cycling Union (UCI), has been a staple in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec since 1969. It has evolved into an international competition and remains a key event in the Junior Nations’ Cup.

This week marks the beginning of a busy summer for Alphonse, a proud graduate of Entrepot Secondary School.

Following the tour, he will participate in a training camp at the UCI satellite training centre in Bromont, from July 23rd to August 8th.

After that, he will compete at the Caribbean Cycling Union Junior Championships in Barbados at the end of August, and then the UCI Junior World Championships in September.

Alphonse’s time in Canada is supported by the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee, Invest Saint Lucia, and UCI Solidarity. His commitment, determination, and talent are set to shine on the international stage.
