Health Ministry Promotes Senior Wellness on International Day for Older Persons

IN recognition of the International Day for Older Persons, celebrated annually on October 1st, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being of Saint Lucia’s senior citizens by hosting a special health and fitness session. The event brought together residents from various Homes for the Elderly for a day dedicated to physical activity and well-being, highlighting the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle for older persons.

Organized by the Ministry’s Health Education and Communications Unit in collaboration with the Elderly Affairs Unit, the event took place at the La Clery playing field. It featured light exercise routines tailored specifically for the elderly, focusing on mobility, flexibility, and balance.

Naomi Grandison, a Health Educator from the Health Education and Communications Unit, shared insights on the initiative’s focus. “We worked in the department to create an environment that empowers our seniors to remain active and engaged in their health journey. This initiative is designed to ensure that our older citizens enjoy a good and fulfilling life,” she said.

Robert Huggins, Acting Director of the Elderly Affairs Unit, emphasised the critical importance of fostering holistic well-being among older persons. “Too many people reach a point where they feel like physical activity is beyond them. Our goal is to change that perception, showing that with the right support, older adults can remain active and feel they’re in good health physically, mentally, and emotionally,” Huggins said.

The event also received support from Robert Fevrier, Administrator of St. Lucy’s Home, who highlighted the significance of creating supportive environments. “As your family and loved ones grow older, it’s crucial to appreciate and embrace them. Ensuring access to health services and fitness programmes is an integral part of this commitment. It allows our seniors to remain vibrant members of our society,” Fevrier said.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs remains steadfast in its mission to provide ongoing support and care for the island’s older population, recognising them as a vital part of the Saint Lucian community.
