Labour Department Endorses Enactment of Minimum Wage Bill

THE Department of Labour is delighted to announce the enactment of the Livable Minimum Wage Bill, which took effect on October 1. The new minimum wage is set at $6.52 per hour or $1,131 per month.

This milestone represents a significant step towards promoting fairness and equality in the workplace, ensuring a guaranteed baseline income for all workers. The department urges employers to adhere to the new minimum wage regulations.

According to a release from the department, the new minimum wage must be paid in addition to any allowances, gratuity, and overtime compensation. To ensure compliance, the department will implement inspection and enforcement measures. Employers are called upon to comply with these new standards, while workers are encouraged to uphold the principle of a fair day’s work.

The department emphasises that mutual respect between employers and employees is crucial for maintaining job satisfaction and fostering economic growth. Additionally, the new minimum wage is seen as a significant stride towards social justice and improving the quality of life for workers across Saint Lucia.
