In response to troubling videos circulating on social media that depict police officers confronting members of the public, Superintendent Troy E Lamontagne, head of the Department of Road Safety and Traffic Investigations, has issued a statement.
Superintendent Lamontagne stressed the importance of road safety, urging all motorists and commuters to exercise caution.
He acknowledged the recent emergence of two videos that showcase police interactions and confirmed that an internal investigation has been launched to fully understand the events from the officers’ perspective.
He stated clearly, “Preliminary observations indicate that the officers’ actions diverged from established police procedures and fundamental principles of professional conduct and human rights. While the internal investigation is ongoing, these matters will be taken seriously.”
Furthermore, he emphasized that a violation of section 23 of the Driving Code, regarding excessive front windscreen tint, is not grounds for impounding registered motor vehicles under typical circumstances.
Superintendent Lamontagne reiterated the duty of the police force to enforce all laws, including traffic regulations. He maintained that while officers must conduct themselves with professionalism and diligence, the public is equally responsible for complying with lawful directives given by police.
For those who feel their rights have been violated, he affirmed, “The law provides clear pathways for redress, whether through the Police Complaints Commission or judicial processes.”
Lamontagne also issued a stern warning to individuals contemplating criminal acts against police officers: “Consider your actions carefully. Those who express criminal intent should be aware-they will encounter a response they may not anticipate or understand.”
He concluded with a firm reassurance: “The safety and security of our community are our top priorities. The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is dedicated to upholding professionalism and building a strong partnership with the public as we work toward enhanced community policing, crime reduction, and improved road safety for everyone.”
