Saint Lucian Health authorities have stated that the recent launch of Breast Cancer Screening Services by the Ministry of Health and Wellness and Elderly Affairs underscores the urgent need for early detection and effective intervention against breast cancer.

The ministry’s personnel clearly articulated the critical role of screenings in the fight against breast cancer.

These services, provided through Universal Health Coverage (UHC), are designed to ensure that accessible breast cancer screening is available to everyone.

Health Minister Moses Jn. Baptiste emphasized that prioritizing health reform is non-negotiable. He stated that the government is collaborating diligently with various stakeholders to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which will include comprehensive training components.

“Our mission is straightforward: We are determined to achieve Universal Health Coverage, which has long been our goal,” he declared.

Minister Jn. Baptiste further highlighted the importance of building on existing frameworks and ensuring consistent policies rather than allowing shifts dictated by the whims of policymakers.

“Our responsibility is to implement sustainable systems that prioritize the health of our people,” he affirmed.

He elaborated, “Our focus as a government is to accelerate health reform. This transition must involve a holistic approach, demanding collaboration across all sectors, with the private sector playing a vital role.”

Improvements in infrastructure and the provision of necessary equipment in the health sector are imperative, according to the Minister. Strengthening capacity and building resilience is equally crucial for effective healthcare delivery.

The Ministry is ramping up public education and outreach campaigns across communities nationwide to raise awareness and promote the use of these essential services. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to the health of the citizens.

Assistant Principal Nursing Officer Tecla Jn. Baptiste reinforced that early detection is the most effective treatment, making health a top priority.

“This launch signifies more than just a service; it reaffirms our unwavering commitment to health equity, early detection, and life-saving care for all women—irrespective of income, geographic location, or status,” she stated.

Institutions like Millennium Heights Medical Complex and St. Jude’s Hospital are fully prepared to deliver safe, high-quality mammography services, supported by trained and dedicated healthcare professionals.

The Community Health Services Unit proudly affirms that breast cancer and cervical cancer screening services are accessible at all community wellness centers across the island.

“These screenings are essential tools in the battle against cancer-this is a rallying cry for every woman-mother, sister, and daughter,” she emphasized.

The health officer reiterated, “Prevention and early detection are not privileges; they are rights that must be available to all.”

Dr. Owen Gabriel, Consultant Oncologist, highlighted the importance of honoring the memory of medical practitioners like Dr. Owen King and Dr. Andrew Richardson, who advocated for women’s health.

He stated, “Late diagnosis results in more extensive treatment.”

Dr. Gabriel added, “Breast cancer is a life-threatening issue that demands our attention. We strongly encourage women to seize this free opportunity for screening, as it could save lives.”
