Kings Eliminated from CPL T20 Playoffs

The St Lucia Kings’ struggles reached a peak as they concluded this season’s CPL T20 series with three consecutive losses, ultimately sealing their fate outside the playoffs.

Their hopes for playoff qualification evaporated after Thursday’s match, where the Barbados Tridents defeated the St Kitts/Nevis Patriots. The Tridents’ victory propelled them to fourth place in the points table, thanks to a superior run rate, leaving the Kings in fifth.

The St Lucia Kings played 10 matches, registering 4 wins and 6 losses for a total of 8 points. Meanwhile, the Tridents have two games in hand, and with the Jamaica Kingsmen also on 8 points but with a game remaining, the Kings’ playoff aspirations were effectively extinguished.

The Kings faced crushing defeats to the St Kitts/Nevis Patriots and the Barbados Tridents before suffering humiliation at the hands of the home team Guyana Amazon Warriors on Wednesday at Providence Stadium, further damaging their playoff chances.

Batting first against the Warriors, the Kings initially appeared strong, reaching 51/1 in the powerplay. However, the loss of top scorer Kamil Pooran, who made 43 off 35 balls, triggered a collapse, leaving them at 60/3 after 8 overs.

Imran Tahir was instrumental for the Warriors, delivering a devastating bowling performance with figures of 5 for 17. On his CPL debut, Mehidy Hasan Miraz also made his mark, claiming 3 for 13.

Despite Dwaine Pretorius claiming an early wicket by trapping Tim Seifert LBW, the Kings seemed to have a game plan in the early overs. As the game progressed, however, Tahir and Miraz launched a spinning onslaught that dismantled the Kings’ batting order.

Obus Pienaar provided some late resistance with a score of 35 before falling to Romario Shepherd, contributing to the Kings’ dismal total of just 119.

In their reply, the Warriors adopted a cautious approach, finishing the power-play at 23/1. However, after losing key players Glen Phillips and Shai Hope, it looked like the Kings might stage a comeback.

Spinners Charith Asalanka and Maheesh Theekshana, alongside Chase, took crucial wickets, leaving the Warriors needing 48 runs from the last five overs with four wickets down.

Quentin Sampson, however, turned the tide for the Warriors. His explosive 37 off just 11 balls, including two sixes and a four off three consecutive deliveries bowled by Chase, secured a vital four-wicket victory.

With this result, the Warriors reclaimed the top spot in the CPL standings with 14 points and two matches still in hand. The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons follow closely in second place, having completed 10 games with 6 wins, 3 losses, and 1 no result, totaling 13 points.
