Opening Night of Jazz and Arts Festival Registers 10,000 Patrons

According to tourism officials, the opening event of this year’s Saint Jazz and Arts Festival at Mindoo Phillip Park was a huge success, with an estimated 10,000 people in attendance.

The crowd was ecstatic, dancing and celebrating into the early hours of the May Day holiday, enthralled by the throbbing beats that echoed throughout the park.

This ‘sold-out’ event  included  a fantastic roster of local, regional, and international artists who performed in a wide range of musical genres.

Tourism Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire  welcomed patrons and tourists, followed by Prime Minister and MP for Castries East, Philip J Pierre, who drew thunderous applause as he declared the official start of  the Jazz &Arts Festival. He urged everyone to enjoy themselves responsibly.

The competitors for this year’s Carnival Queen Pageant were also in the spotlight, as they paraded the grounds dressed elegantly for the evening.

Gretchen Wilson and her band produced a fantastic Country Music performance, and iconic Jamaican performer Sizzla Kalonji performed a selection of his best songs. The show was augmented with lively Soca, Bouyon, and DJ party music.

Gretchen Wilson and her band took  the audience on a memorable journey of country music, interspersed with some powerful Rock & Roll beats that captivated  the crowd.

Sizzla controlled the stage, delivering his hit songs with a dominating presence that captivated both young and old fans.

Following his exciting concert, local DJs pumped up the crowd before Lady Lava took the stage to perform her high-energy Soca selections. Dominican bouyon acts, which are gaining popularity in the region, were another highlight of the show, along with other regional performers on stage.

DYP and Friends wrapped up the event with an amazing conclusion showcasing some of Saint Lucia’s greatest talent, including reggae artist Zionomi and ‘Dennery section’ stars Shemmy J and General Banks.

Sizzla talked about the event in a post-show interview with much enthusiasm. “It was prolific,” he explained. “This festival is beautiful and magical, and I am honoured to be a part of it. It’s a significant platform to showcase top talent.”

Sizzla expressed pride in representing “the musical fraternity, worldwide, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.”

He stated, “It was a vivid experience—the fans were singing along; the venue was alive and packed.” Much respect to the promoters and everyone involved in making this event a reality.”
