Expanding Tourism Offerings to Benefit Locals

Saint Lucia is enhancing its offerings to create more opportunities for tourism while promoting local participation and benefits from the industry.

Tourism Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire emphasized that innovation is crucial for boosting the island’s competitive appeal in the global tourism landscape.

He highlighted that the new Underwater Sculpture Park is part of these bold initiatives aimed at attracting more visitors.

In a “tightly competitive” environment, Dr. Hilaire stated, “Almost every island offers beautiful landscapes, sunshine, beaches, and hospitality; therefore, we must differentiate Saint Lucia and provide reasons for visitors to return.”

The government has adopted a decisive and strategic approach to tourism, ensuring that marketing efforts align with the interests of local communities.

Dr. Hilaire said, “We must market the destination aggressively while developing it with our people in mind.”

The opening of the Underwater Sculpture Park is a significant step in the government’s strategy to enhance the island’s tourism offerings and create opportunities for its residents.

Minister Hilaire praised the park as a historic project that emphasizes national ownership and cultural storytelling.

Project Highlights:

– Cultural Ownership: Local artists and community members designed the sculptures, allowing Saint Lucians to define how their heritage is presented to the world.

– Location: The sculptures are installed underwater at Anse La Verdue in Canaries on the island’s west coast.

– Underwater Corridor: The site is part of a larger marine initiative, which includes a Dive Park, a Snorkel Park, and a Conservation Park.

– Public Exhibition: Before their installation on the ocean floor, the sculptures were showcased in a free public exhibition at the Odsan Warehouse.

This initiative not only serves to attract tourists but also reinforces the cultural identity and economic opportunities for the people of Saint Lucia.
