Newly Renovated Custody Suites to Reopen on Friday

On Friday, the government will unveil its newly refurbished Custody Suites, a crucial facility enabling law enforcement officers to perform their duties effectively.

This opening addresses a long-standing need, as emphasised by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, who stated that this facility was overdue for completion.

PM Pierre asserted that the previous government’s decision to demolish the Custody Suites forced police to resort to keeping apprehended suspects in insufficient “holding cells.”

During a media briefing on Monday, Pierre announced, “The Custody Suites have been remodeled. Supply-chain issues have been resolved, and now the police will have a functional holding facility to strengthen their fight against crime.”

According to the National Security Minister, this eight-holding cell facility will drastically enhance the efficiency of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force (RSLPF). High-ranking members of the RSLPF have confirmed that the location-whether in Castries or Vieux Fort-does not matter; the improved facilities are essential.

This new development has garnered significant attention locally. Since 2020, discussions have centered around the controversial demolition of the original structure by the Allen Chastanet-led administration.

PM Pierre highlighted the importance of this reopening on May 23rd and noted that the issue will be prominently addressed during the opening ceremony.

Furthermore, PM Pierre announced the acquisition of bullet-proof vests and ‘special belts’ for the police. On Friday, law enforcement officers will also receive a specially prepared prison escort vehicle to enhance the transport of inmates from the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) to the courts.
