10 Points for a10-Year Plan for Vieux-Fort Central

By Calyx Bourne – A Member of the Vieux-Fort Community

THE residents of Vieux Fort Central (V-Fort) have reached a breaking point and are calling for an immediate wake-up call to the government, businesses, and all stakeholders who have turned a blind eye to the ills of our community. We demand that our voices be heard, and real action be taken to address our concerns. No more will a Parliamentary Representative come to V-Fort without agreeing to a locked-in signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in a general town hall open forum with the entire V-Fort community, near and far.

We are tired of all the false promises and the lack of foresight from our elected officials. And now we’ve become colour blind, and all the communities will have one energy or need, “Put V-Fort First” and not the party.

I present to the government a clear agenda for the people of Vieux-Fort Central. The ten points outlined below represent our 10-year goals, (10 for 10) focusing on the holistic development and sustainable growth of the Vieux-Fort community:

1. A Robust Agenda in V-Fort Markets: Our aim is to revitalize the V-Fort markets, creating a vibrant space for local commerce and entrepreneurship. By providing the necessary resources and infrastructure, we can empower small businesses, boost economic growth, and foster self-sustainability within our community.

2.Fisheries Preservation: We seek your support to implement measures that protect our valuable marine resources, ensuring the sustainable future of our fishermen. By promoting responsible fishing practices and supporting marine awareness initiatives, we can safeguard our marine environment for future generations.

3. Enhancing V-Fort Sea Ports and Marina: The economic growth of our community heavily relies on container goods and services including tourism. By investing in our southern sea ports, we can attract more visitors, create employment opportunities, and elevate the overall tourism experience. Collaboration in this area will be crucial for the development and prosperity of our region.

4. The Continuation of a Thriving Marina: The Laubushee Marina on the west side of V-Fort is a vibrant hub for boating enthusiasts and visitors alike. By supporting its development and maintenance, we can attract more yacht and tourism boats, create employment opportunities, and enhance the overall appeal of our community as a premier destination.

5. The grand approach on a Multi-Shoot Per Airline with our own Hewanorra International Airport (HIA): Strengthening our connectivity with the world is paramount. We recognize the need for a robust and diverse airline network. By collaborating with other International Airlines, we can work towards implementing a multi-shoot per airline approach, increasing flight frequency, improving travel accessibility, and promoting tourism and business opportunities in our region.

These areas of collaboration, points 1 to 5, are integral to the holistic development and sustainable growth of our community. By addressing these aspects, we can maximize the potential of our resources, attract visitors, create employment, and ultimately build a thriving and prosperous V-Fort southern region.

6. Unique Business Accelerator Initiative: We envision the establishment of a business accelerator programme that nurtures local talent and fosters entrepreneurship. By providing mentorship, resources, and networking opportunities, we can empower aspiring business leaders, ignite innovation, and drive economic prosperity within our community.

7. Big Push for Organic Agriculture: Food security is of utmost importance to us. Promoting organic agriculture is key to achieving it. By supporting sustainable farming practices, we can ensure a steady supply of nutritious, locally produced food, improve livelihoods, and preserve our natural resources.

8. Software Development Community: To adapt to the digital age, we need to cultivate a software development community that nurtures digital talent called Tech Yard. By providing training and creating an environment that encourages innovation, we can unlock the potential of our youth, positioning them as pioneers in the digital world.

9. AI-based Crime Prevention: With safety concerns on the rise, we aim to develop an in-house app that utilizes AI algorithms to detect and prevent crime and theft. This innovative solution will enhance security measures and establish our community as a model for cutting-edge technology adoption.

10. Comprehensive Apprenticeship Program: We aspire to launch an extensive apprenticeship programme covering a wide range of subjects in the hundreds. By facilitating internships and partnering with local businesses, we can provide practical skills, valuable work experience, and pathways to employment for our youth and the unemployed adults.

These 6 to 10 points goals.

The implementation of these vital initiatives will be made possible through a strategic government funding injection, ensuring substantial financial backing for their successful execution. The Save The Youth Center will play a crucial role by spearheading efforts, leveraging its expertise, and coordinating community-driven programs to address the needs of our youth. Additionally, other community stakeholders will actively contribute their resources, knowledge, and support to bolster the impact of these initiatives, fostering a collaborative and united approach towards building a stronger, more prosperous V-Fort community for all Citizens of St Lucia.

We implore the government of St Lucia, businesses, and all stakeholders to heed our call. It is time for action, not empty promises. The people of V-Fort Central are ready for change, and we expect our elected representatives to engage in meaningful dialogue and commit to implementing the necessary initiatives outlined in our agenda.

Together, let us create a prosperous and vibrant V-Fort Central.
