OAS Grants US $25,000 Assistance to Help Tackle Bad Weather Damage

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) has provided US $25,000 worth of emergency aid to Saint Lucia in the wake of the recent damage cause by recent bad weather systems that caused intense flooding that also damaged infrastructure.

This was announced by Secretary General Luis Almagro on December 2, 2022, in a letter to the current Chair of the OAS Permanent Council, Surinam’s Ambassador Jan Marten Willem Schalkwijk.

Secretary General Almagro indicated to the Council’s chair the General Secretariat “will proceed to grant a payment of $25,000 to the Government of Saint Lucia, as emergency aid to help address damage caused by the floodings.”

The assistance was made in accordance with Article V of the Statutes of the Inter-American Emergency Aid Fund (FONDEM), which allows the Secretary General to make such allocations out of unused sums from 2021.

The sum allocated is also the maximum allowed.
