SRDF Wardens Certified in Maritime Law

The Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF) is steadily taking strides to accomplish its mission to ensure close adherence to the ISPS (International Security and Port Facility Code).Ā

On Friday 19th, November, 2021, 12 wardens were presented with certificates in Maritime Law after successfully completing a training exercise with the St Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA).Ā  The exercise was intended to enhance the participantsā€™ knowledge and skills to execute their duties productively and efficiently.

ā€œThe dock is evolving into a multifunctional department. Apart from our normal duties as wardens and cashiers, we have Special Police Constables, Beach Rangers and now with this training in Maritime Law, we will become Port Officers with the power to intercept unworthy sea vessels and charge Captains who behave in a reckless manner. We will have the full support of SLASPA, Customs and the Police whilst executing these duties,ā€ said Dock Supervisor, Mr. Lennox Perpie.

The training which was facilitated by Mr. Christopher Alexander, Director of Maritime Affairs at SLASPA, was held over a two day period at the Soufriere Foundation.

According to Wilbur Etienne, SLASPA Maritime Officer, ā€œAs we know the tourism industry is a fragile sector and having additional law enforcement in Soufriere will further bolster the security and safety of visitors and locals. Our commitment in enhancing the maritime safety of locals and visitors draw strength through the collaborative efforts of stakeholders and the willingness to improve our product which is vital to the community.ā€

The Soufriere Foundation extends gratitude to the St Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority for their intervention. The organisation remains committed to building the capacity of its staff and elevating the standards of the tourism product.

The Soufriere Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation located in Soufriere. Its mandate is to undertake social, economic, cultural, and other sustainable developments in the Soufriere region. The organisation which was established in 1993 generates revenues from its operational sites: the Sulphur Springs Park, Gros Piton Nature Trail, Comfort Centre, Soufriere jetties, 88.5 Soufriere FM, and Soufriere Beach Park.
