THE youth of St Lucia are creative, engaging, and authentic and have good taste, like design and fun. As a result, they are producing and have the potential to create exceptional work which can take its place on the creative arts platform of St Lucia.
This philosophy is the rational for the ‘KweArt’ festival, a space to showcase the new generation of Lucian artistes. The festival is also a fundraiser for the Folk Research Centre(FRC) and an FRC and D. Simenel Productions project.
The Nobel Laureate Week Committee has made youth development as well as promoting artistic enterprise and talent, major components of its activities.
In keeping with this and acknowledging the Visual arts talents of Poet Lureate Derek Walcott, KweArt will be launched as a part of this year’s Nobel Laureate Week activities.
This first edition of KweArt will be a two day festival, where, in a climate of union, artists and art professionals, local and international, will come together to discuss the practice of the artistic expression in St Lucia.
The festival will take place at the Folk Research Centre, Mount Pleasant, Castries.
BOKA group exhibition
The products of the workshops and the paintings of artists who also work as arts educators will be on display as a means as exposing students to the visual arts.
This exhibition will be on display at the FRC until February 13 for the general public and neighbouring schools. The student component of the exhibition will then travel to the other schools and districts for the rest of the term ending on March 27.

Sir Arthur Lewis For Teens: How His Model Works.
H.E. Mr. Sergio Couri is a career diplomat and is currently the Ambassador of Brazil to Saint Lucia, and the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the OECS. He was born in Nitteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ambassador is also an economist, a lawyer and a writer, and is a member of the Brasília Academy of Literature. Ambassador Couri is the author of several publications on economics and poetry. Hei will explain the famous theory developed by Sir Arthur Lewis in a didactic way that can be understood by teenagers.
Film for social and behavioural change
The. St. Lucia Animal Protection Society have commissioned a short educational video, the goal of which is to help sensitize the youth of the island to the care and understanding of animals. A short chat after the movie will be held with the SLAPS director.
Translating poetry into art
Participants will be taught how to translate a chosen Derek Walcott’s Poem into paintings by local artist and Arts educator, DelthiaNatrium. This workshop will culminate on Saturday January 17.
Live Art Atelier: ‘Repurposing the old into new’ workshop by Gary Butte. Students will be taught how to recycle materials/items by utilising visual arts techniques.
Translating poetry into art (continuation)
Kweyol Inspired fashion show and performances featuring the creations of local designers such as ZenZen Designs and Jeaylu Designs as well as the designs from the schools from the 2014 JennesKweyol Pageant.
The evening will also feature the artwork created in the workshops and musical renditions by FaustoNoleto and Dito Pereira from Brazil and Lorena Guillen and Argentina Alejandro Rutty, from Argentina. A Special Musical Duet in between, the songwriter Shayne Ross and the Top Model Lisa Marie Faustin will close the festivities.
