THE Consulate General of Saint Lucia in New York yesterday announced that celebrations to mark Saint Lucia’s 36th anniversary of independence will officially open with the annual Gospel Festival on Saturday, February 7.

The Independence 36 Gospel Fest will feature a host of gifted Saint Lucian gospel entertainers, church choirs, praise dancers, Saint Lucian cultural groups, and many other inspirational artistes. Saint Lucian performers will include Billy Poyotte, the Tappin Sisters, PJ Stanislas, Kamaala Emmanuel, Kayanna Lumpkin, and Keran “Fimber” Deterville.

“This wonderful event, now in its second year,” said Julian Du Bois, Saint Lucia’s Consul General in New York, “was introduced as an avenue for emerging gospel artistes, entertainers and others in the Diaspora to showcase their talents and be thankful for the countless blessings that have been bestowed upon our beautiful Fair Helen.”

The Independence 36 Gospel Fest is one of numerous celebratory activities taking place in New York and Connecticut during the month of February. The next scheduled event in New York is the annual Independence Lecture slated for Wednesday, February 11, at the Saint Lucia House, located at 438 E 49th Street, Brooklyn, New York.

Cancelled due to snow last year, this event will feature Professor Alvin Hippolyte, Saint Lucian actor, director, and writer, as the main presenter at the forum. Admission to this event is free.
