Julien Alfred Sets National Mark

ST. LUCIA Athletic Association’s “Juvenile Female Athlete for the Year” for 2014 Julien Alfred has rewritten the record books for the Ladies 200 metres in a time of 24.27 seconds.
Running for Survivors Track and Field Club at the George Odlum stadium at the weekend, she eclipsed a nine year old record set by MericaMoncherry at the 2006 Carifta Games in Guadeloupe.
The two day meet organised by the SLAA, was dubbed “Last CARIFTA Qualifier” to choose athletes to represent St. Lucia at the 44th. of the CARIFTA games to be held in St. Kitts and Nevis.
The medium built Alfred showed class and dominance on the straight as she went on to capture gold in the 100 metres in a time of 11.76 seconds and 200 metres. She was the only athlete out of the 250 registered for the championship to attain the qualifying mark set by the SLAA.

Apart from Julien Alfred’s scintillating record breaking effort, other performances of note came from the slimly built 15 year old KamillahMonroque of Rockets Athletics Club, who won gold medals in the 3000 metres, 1500 metres and 800 metres .
With a strong wind coming from the north east the SLAA Junior female athlete of the Year Rochelle Etienne won the javelin throw on her fourth attempt with a distance of 37.83 metres to attain a B standard. She also clipped the A standard set of 11.90 metres in the shot putt with a distance of 12.21 metres.
Elite Track and Field Club with the likes of world ranked high jumper Levern Spencer, former sprinter VernettaLesporis and javelin thrower Albert Reynolds also had something to shout about when Imanuel Alexander met the B standard for boys 800 metres under -18 with a time of 1 minute 58.86 to win gold.
In the high jump boys Ace Louis was a class act with clearing 2:00 metres to win gold, while the SLAA “Junior athlete for the Year” Mickey Ferdinand had to settle for the silver ware with a clearance of 1.95 metres.

Though off by some 478 points Uric Mathurin competing in the Octahlon compiled a score of 4,315 to win gold.
Representing Choiseul was Amber Lucien who threw 30.73 metres to capture gold in the discuss for under-18 girls. She was just two metres shy of the B standard.
With a B standard set of 1.71m Ashlee Edward of Abilene’s competing in the under-20 division, cleared 1.65 metres in the high jump.
Meanwhile, the SLAA Technical Committee is scheduled to meet today to select St.Lucia contingent for the games.
