In a moment that blended personal history with national ambition, Sir Dr. Winston C.V. Parris the distinguished physician for whom the facility is named walked the corridors of the Dr. Winston C.V. Parris Medical Complex in a comprehensive tour organized by Health Officials from the Corporate Planning Unit within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition.
Accompanied by his wife, Madame Parris, and guided by senior health officials, Sir Dr. Parris received a detailed briefing on the complex’s current operational workflow, the full range of services now being offered to the public, and a forward-looking presentation on areas of the facility still under active construction. The tour also featured extensive dialogue between Sir Dr. Parris and ministry officials on the facility’s medium and long-term development road map.
According to Len Leonce, the Quality Assurance Officer in the Corporate Planning Unit, the visit provided a valuable opportunity for reflection and planning, as Sir Dr. Parris shared unique historical insights into the facility’s evolution. “Today we went through the old emergency section, our current Betty Wells section, where we provide services to the national eye clinic, the secondary care unit, and the SRH clinic. So various parts of the complex, some operational as we speak, some under construction, and some with architectural drawings with planned construction coming in the next couple of months. It was a good visit; he was able to provide some historical insight into his previous employment. He last visited the facility in 1975, so he contained a wealth of knowledge, and he was able to inform our technical team who conducted the tour of various facets, painting a picture of how the facility operated in 1975.”

Sir Dr. Winston C. V. Parris expressed optimism about the facility’s future, noting its potential to strengthen healthcare delivery and ease pressure on existing services. “My hope, already some of those aspirations are taking place, you don’t want to overload the OKEU hospital and this facility seems to offer that solution. The overflow patients you can accommodate. I see you have plans for, in the event there’s a catastrophe like COVID or where you require mass isolation, you have taken it. So to me, there’s a lot of planning that has gone in. Some of them haven’t been implemented, but these things take time and money. But I think the direction is positive. And I think I can see in the next 10 years, 15 years, this would be a model facility for Caribbean medicine.”
Sir Dr. Winston C. V. Parris also took the opportunity to commend the high standard of healthcare professionals serving within the system. “We have very competent people here, local and foreign physicians and nurses. We should be proud of them. They are doing an incredible job. I have practiced in many countries around the world and I have been to a lot of countries around the world in my capacity as president of the World Society of Pain Physicians. I can tell you we can be proud of what we have here.”
As construction progresses and services continue to expand at the Dr. Winston C Parris Medical Complex, health officials remain optimistic that the facility will play a pivotal role in strengthening Saint Lucia’s healthcare system, easing pressure on existing institutions and enhance access to quality care.
