Julien “Juju” Alfred Crowned SLAA Top Athlete

Saint Lucia’s premier athletic star, Julien “Juju” Alfred, was honored as the top athlete at the Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA) annual awards ceremony held at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on January 24.

In a spectacular evening that celebrated both past achievements and future potential, the SLAA named Alfred the Female Athlete of the Year for 2025. She shares the spotlight with quarter-miler Marvric Pamphile, who received the Male Athlete of the Year title.

Held under the theme, “A Legacy of Performance, A Future of Possibilities,” the awards gala paid tribute to the many contributors to the sport, honoring athletes, coaches, administrators, and technical officials.

Alfred, the reigning 2024 Olympic 100m champion and a World Championship bronze medalist, solidified her status as a national icon through her remarkable performances.

Pamphile’s impressive track record in the 400m earned him equal recognition, highlighting an outstanding year for Saint Lucia’s elite athletes.

The future of athletics in Saint Lucia looks promising, as exemplified by the Junior Athletes of the Year. Female junior champion Jady Emmanuel shone in the sprints, while record-setting thrower Denzel Phillips captured the male title.

Additionally, rising stars Avery Maryat and Hadassah Jules were recognized for their exceptional performances throughout the year.

Beyond the athletes, the SLAA acknowledged key figures in the sport’s success. Denise Herman of Choiseul Athletics was honored as Coach of the Year, while Finley Louis of the Abilene Wildcats received a special Coach Dedication Award for his two decades of unwavering service.

In a remarkable transition from athlete to administrator, former Athlete and Sportswoman of the Year Makeba Alcide was awarded Administrator of the Year.

The prestigious event attracted notable attendees, including Kenson Casimir, Minister for Youth Development, Sports, and Digital Transformation, as well as dignitaries from the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee and the National Lotteries Authority.

Choiseul Athletics made a strong showing, securing three of the night’s top awards.

Recognizing the importance of community contribution, young Noya Alexander was hailed as the top volunteer of the year.

Louise Victor-Frederick, a distinguished corporate leader and former beauty queen, delivered an inspiring speech, reminding attendees of the potential impact of athletes like Julien Alfred on the broader community.

In recognition of media contributions, Vybe Radio was awarded the Media Partnership Award.

The SLAA awards night reaffirmed a commitment to excellence in athletics and celebrated the inspiring legacy of Saint Lucia’s sporting community.
