Creativity found meaningful expression at the Bordelais Correctional Facility earlier this month, as eight residents took part in a two-day lantern-making workshop held on Tuesday, December 2 and Wednesday, December 3. The initiative formed part of an ongoing training collaboration with the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) and was facilitated by renowned visual artist and lantern builder Gary Butte.
The workshop offered participants more than a practical skill—it provided an opportunity for self-expression, collaboration, and personal growth. Guided by Butte, the residents explored the fundamentals of lantern design, transforming initial sketches on paper into fully realized structures. The process encouraged problem-solving, patience, and teamwork, all essential life skills that extend well beyond the workshop space.
The level of engagement and creativity displayed throughout the sessions was highly encouraging. By the end of the workshop, participants successfully produced three lantern submissions for the National Lantern Competition, marking Bordelais’ first-ever entry into the event. This milestone reflects the untapped creative potential that exists within correctional environments when individuals are given access to the arts.
Creative programmes within correctional facilities play a vital role in rehabilitation. They provide constructive outlets for emotion, reduce stress, build confidence, and foster a sense of achievement. More importantly, they remind participants of their capacity to contribute positively to society and cultural life.
The Cultural Development Foundation commends the residents of Bordelais Correctional Facility for their dedication and creativity, and Gary Butte for his patient mentorship. This initiative stands as a powerful example of how culture and creativity can support rehabilitation, reintegration, and human development. As the December festivals continue to evolve, CDF looks forward to expanded participation and continued creative expression from Bordelais in future years.
