The Government of Saint Lucia and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Pharmacopoeial Cooperation. Under the agreement, the two countries will work together on the regulation of medicines and share information in that field.

Under the MoU, Saint Lucia will accept the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) as a book of standards for medicines. This is meant to ensure the quality of medicines manufactured in or imported into the island. Saint Lucia will also accept the Certificate of Analysis issued by Indian manufacturers under IP standards. This removes the need to test those medicines a second time locally.

The agreement is expected to support the development of generic medicines and make affordable medicines more widely available in Saint Lucia.

India’s High Commissioner to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Subhash Gupta, said the agreement is part of a wider vision of global cooperation in health. “Saint Lucia’s recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia will extend importation, quality assurance registration of the Indian Pharmaceutical products facilitating access to affordable high-quality generic medicines. This MOU further presents an opportunity to replicate the World’s largest medicine supply system. Providing affordable medicines to the people of the country through dedicated outlets. This initiative aligns with the Indian philosophy that the entire world is one family and this MOU fosters global unity in the realm of health and wellbeing,” the High Commissioner stated.

Minister for Health, Wellness and Nutrition Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste called the MoU a landmark step towards the government’s goal of universal health care adding that it could lead to a much broader partnership with India.

“This landmark Pharmacopoeia MOU aligns perfectly with our government’s highest priority which is delivering accessible high-quality universal health care to every citizen of Saint Lucia. By standardizing our regulatory frame work we are unlocking immediate access to safe affordable and lifesaving generic medicines. This ceremony is not just a reflection of our commitment to strengthening existing diplomatic bonds, it is a precursor for an even deeper health partnership.

Through this MOU we look forward to exploring transformative Indian initiatives ranging from the generic drug models to acquiring lifesaving infrastructure including hemodialysis units, CDERA 2 Cancer Therapy machines, Sea Ambulances and the revolutionary Cubes for mobile hospital facilities,” the minister said.
