SPFL Affected But Running Strong

Last weekend’s football action in the St. Lucia Semi Professional Football League (SPFL) may have been affected the inclement weather but there was much to enjoy.

.

On Friday evening, Marchand’s Lincoln Phillip upped his tally with a 48-minute penalty kick but that was not enough to down Roseau. Phillip’s goal came after Omari Joseph opened the scoring in the 12th minute followed by a 31-minute strike from Stephan Valty to secure a first half 2-0 lead and ultimately the winning goal.

Saturday’s encounters saw South Castries take an unexpected 3 points against Mabouya Valley. Stephen Octave, who scored a brace, opened his account in the 18th minute to register the first goal of the game. A resilient Mabouya Valley got tgheir equalizer just before the half through Maius Stanislaus’s 44th minute goal. The Valley team would go ahead in the second minute of first half extra time through Ethan Oculi, a product of the recent National Under 15 & Under 17 teams. South Castries, not in stunning form lately, left it late to secure the win amazingly in the 5h minute of extra time, grabbing all three points.

Saturday’s second match was expected to be a tough assignment for both teams, and it showed in the scoreline. Canaries and Dennery, for many, were teams that were evenly poised. However, home team Canaries were expecting to thrill the home crowd who had been immensely supportive, not only to their team but to football in Canaries generally.  Dennery’s Newton Marshall found the back of the net in the 72nd minute only to have his goal cancelled by Bradley Tisson’s strike in the 84th.  At one goal a piece it could have gone either way however the team had to be satisfied to share the points.

Fans were gearing up for a bumper Sunday with Gros Islet scheduled to meet Choiseul and Soufriere facing a Vieux Fort team with much to offer. Those games had to be postponed due to inclement weather and the threat of heavy tropical storm rain.

All games last weekend took place at the Canaries Playing Field.
