Saint Lucia has lost a true local music icon in Nicole Nikki” David. The local soca sensation has had a long battle with cancer.

Nicole David has been credited with playing a major role in driving the artform in an upward trajectory through her work and more specifically through her powerful performances, locally and regionally, and through her memorable songs. “Queen of the Jungle”, “Jammette” and “Wukking Up is We Culture” are only some of the powerful tunes that have resonated on the local and regional soca scene.

“It is with immense sadness that we mark the passing of Nicole David, affectionately known to all as Nikki, a true luminary in Saint Lucian music. Nikki made indelible history, becoming the first woman to win the coveted Roadmarch title with her electrifying hit, ‘Queen of the Jungle,’ universally known as ‘Bounce’,” Michael Rogers from ‘The Wave’ noted.

“‘Bounce’ was more than just a song; it was an anthem that captured the spirit of Carnival, its infectious rhythm and Nikki’s dynamic delivery solidifying her reputation as one of the island’s most vibrant and influential female performers. Her presence on stage was phenomenal, her energy infectious, and her ability to connect with an audience unparalleled. Nikki was a trailblazer, a phenomenal lady, and an artist who broke barriers and inspired countless others. Her legacy as the ‘Queen of the Jungle’ and a pivotal figure in Saint Lucian music will undoubtedly live on. She will be profoundly missed, but her ‘Bounce’ will forever echo in our hearts and across our airwaves,” Rogers added.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of beloved soca artist Nicole David, a powerful voice, a vibrant spirit and a true daughter of our culture. To her family, friends, fellow artists and all who were touched by her talent and warmth, I extend our heartfelt condolences. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet said on his Facebook page.

Tourism Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire also noted that “The carnival and musical fraternity mourns the loss of a beloved and treasured gem, friend and soca queen, Nicole David. A true Soca Queen — not just by title, but by the undeniable fire she brought to the genre — she leaves behind a carnival of memories and melodies that will echo through time. Though her physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit will never fade. Her voice lives in every fete, every road march, every soul that dances to the rhythm of the islands. She may be gone, but her music makes her immortal.”
