SLBA Honours Two Boxing Stalwarts

The Saint Lucia Boxing Association (SLBA) honoured two stalwarts during the recently concluded Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Invitational Boxing Championship, held at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

Guy Lawrence, a fourteen-time OECS Champion, who was present at the event to receive his award from Breadline Descartes, the President of the Saint Lucia Athletic Association (SLAA), and SLBA President David “Shakes” Christopher.

Lawrence had an illustrious career, winning the Guinness Boxing Classic title in 1980, the Caribbean Boxing title in 1987, and the WBC South American Lightweight title in 2000. In 1987, Lawrence became the first boxer in Saint Lucia’s history to receive the prestigious Sportsman of the Year award.

The SLBA also honoured Rosemond Clery, although he did not attend the event. A representative collected the award on his behalf from Kwency McKeever, a local artist known as “Pringles”.
