As Saint Lucians prepare to vote on December 1, political rivalry and tensions are escalating. With less than a week remaining, religious authorities and civic society have issued a firm demand for all political parties to adhere to an ethical Code of Conduct.
Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre addressed a recent press release from the United Workers Party (UWP) with clarity and assertiveness, underscoring that while others may choose distraction, the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) remains focused on delivering results.
Despite the proposed Breach of Conduct suggesting no political meetings should occur on Sundays, the UWP went ahead and launched its party manifesto in Dennery on Sunday, November 23. Reports confirm that the UWP adjusted its agenda from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate this event.
In response, PM Pierre stated unequivocally, “This is yet another excuse-making tactic from the opposition. The UWP spreads lies openly… they hold motorcades on Sundays, they witness it firsthand, yet they deny the truth.”

He emphasized, “The agreement was clear: no political activity, day or night. They have violated that agreement.” At a formal event on Monday, the Code of Conduct was officially signed by Therold Prudent on behalf of the UWP, independent candidate Stephenson King, and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, leader of the SLP.
The Joint Agreement and Declaration on Political Conduct clearly states: “This code and joint agreement must be signed by all individuals wishing to run for election,” asserted Rosemary Husbands- Mathurin , former national ombudsman and adjudicator at the proceedings.
She outlined the critical components of the Code that all electoral candidates must commit to:
– Non-violence and Non-intimidation : Safeguarding both private and public property while avoiding confrontations.
– Truthful Public Utterances: Ensuring that public statements do not constitute slander or libel.
– Freedom to Campaign: It is essential that parties and candidates do not hinder anyone from canvassing or campaigning.
– Respect for Property: Avoiding the defacement of buildings or installations.
– Public Responsibility: The Code includes responsibilities for the public as well.
– Media Accountability: The media holds a crucial responsibility to wield their influence responsibly in reporting news and opinions.

“This is the code that all individuals interested in elective politics must sign before engaging in the campaign,” Husbands-Mathurin asserted.
