The St. Joseph’s Convent Steel Pan Orchestra proudly carried the Saint Lucian flag across the sea, delivering a captivating performance at the La Port des Arts Festival in Martinique last week. This marked the orchestra’s debut at the esteemed cultural event and a proud moment in the ongoing story of regional artistic collaboration.

A delegation of 20 student musicians and six staff members made the journey, including the school’s Principal, French teacher, steel pan coach, and a medical doctor, ensuring the students’ safety, support, and cultural immersion throughout the experience.

The group performed a vibrant and eclectic repertoire that blended authentic Caribbean rhythms with international musical influences. Their dynamic showcase captivated the audience and earned them a formal invitation to return for the 2026 edition of the festival.

This cultural milestone was made possible through the efforts of Shazi Chalon, Saint Lucia’s Cultural Attaché to Martinique. Her commitment to promoting Saint Lucian arts and building strong Caribbean ties played a pivotal role in facilitating the orchestra’s participation. Organizers of the festival in Martinique also extended valuable support to ensure the event’s success and the meaningful inclusion of the Saint Lucian ensemble.

As Saint Lucia and Martinique continue to strengthen their cultural and diplomatic ties, events like the La Port des Arts Festival serve as powerful reminders of the value of artistic exchange — fostering mutual understanding, youth empowerment, and regional unity.
