SLBS Participates in Groundbreaking Governance Standard

The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) is pleased to inform of the latest results of the increased participation in International Standardization, a significant outcome of the Commonwealth Standards Network (CSN) project, which provided technical assistance aimed at SLBS leveraging Saint Lucia’s ISO membership to ensure the participation of Small Island State States (SIDS) in relevant and emerging global issues.  

Saint Lucia was one of 70 countries who participated in the development of an International Standard on Governance in Organizations.

The SLBS Technical Committee (TC) 18 Management Services-subcommittee on Governance facilitated Saint Lucia’s participation in the process by mirroring the work of the ISO TC 309 Governance in organizations.  The committee brought together representatives of educational and research institutions, management consultants, governance experts, consumer groups, government agencies and special interest groups, among others, with a wealth of knowledge and experience that was used to guide Saint Lucia’s participation in the international work and national adoptions.

The standard ISO 37000:2021 Governance of Organizations – Guidance, provides organizations and their governing bodies with the tools needed to be accountable, transparent and maintain ethical standards in their operations.  Effectively the standards principle-based requirements for steering an organization effectively, and ensuring that the operations of the organization fulfils its purpose and owner-stakeholders’ objectives. To date there are a number of these international standards adopted nationally and used in Saint Lucia.  .

The ISO standard published on 15th September, 2021 is available for purchase from the SLBS and the Technical Committee is expected to propose identical national adoption within the next 3 to 6 months, to facilitate the accessibility of this guidance document to all public and private sector organizations (large and small), as well as non-governmental organizations.

The SLBS will conduct a national seminar on Governance in Organizations, as part of activities to commemorate World Standards Day on 14th October 2021, with feature speaker Dr Axel Kravatzky, Co-convenor of ISO TC 309 WG 1 and Vice Chair of ISO TC 309.
