PRESS RELEASE – THE Saint Lucia Labour Party joins the international community, family, and friends of Mr. Kofi Annan in bidding farewell to the former Secretary General of the United Nations. Mr. Annan, who served at the helm of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006, epitomized the true essence of global partnership, and multilateralism. He was a champion for equity and worked tirelessly during his tenure to give a voice to the voiceless, and to secure the benefits of development for the marginalized and downtrodden across the world.

The Labour Party acknowledges with great respect and admiration, Mr. Annan’s dedication to bridging the gap between rich and poor. His selfless resolve led to the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). As a champion of human and social development, Mr Annan shared a passion for equality, world freedom, and justice that permeated all facets of the organization that he led. His tenure as Secretary General of the United Nations coincided with the period of SLP governance of Saint Lucia, when the greatest success in bridging the socio-economic divide in St. Lucia was achieved.

We thank Mr. Annan for the leadership he provided and the opportunities he afforded to Small Island Developing States to engage in International discourse as true and equal partners.

The Labour Party is honored to have forged a special relationship with Mr. Annan in 2003 when St. Lucia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and former Leader of the SLP, Ambassador Julian R. Hunte served as the 58th President of the UN General Assembly. That was a period of historic significance for Saint Lucia and one we will forever be proud of.

The world has felt the impact of the people-centered leadership of Mr. Kofi Annan and the void caused by his passing.

May he rest in Eternal Peace.
