MEXICO marked the 205th Anniversary of its Independence yesterday. To commemorate the occasion, the Embassy of Mexico to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, based in Saint Lucia, held a reception at Kaye Blanche in Rodney Bay on Tuesday.

In attendance were several dignitaries, including the Ambassador of Mexico to Saint Lucia, Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno, Governor General, Dame PearletteLouisy, Prime Minister Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, former Prime Minister Stephenson King and several Cabinet and parliamentary colleagues.

Ambassador Moreno took the opportunity to pledge his government’s support towards helping rebuild the village of Petit Savanne in the Commonwealth of Dominica, destroyed by the passage of Tropical Storm Erika on August 27.

But with the spectre of climate change affecting the island states of the Caribbean, Dr. Anthony also thanked the Government of Mexico for its intervention to help bring pipe-borne water to thousands of residents of the Mabouya Valley in Dennery North.

Said Dr. Anthony: “I want to single out one particular project that is resonating and changing the lives of those who will benefit by it. And that is the project, to bring water to the people of Dennery North. Mexico has made a grant to Saint Lucia of US$5 million for that project, and I am told that at this stage we are now into procurement, hoping that an appropriate contractor will eventually be selected for that project”

The Prime Minister congratulated Mexico on its attainment of 205 years of Independence, and lauded the continued good relations between Saint Lucia and Mexico started in 1979.
