THE Gordon Walcott Memorial Methodist School iss singing the praises of two of its grade five students who brought pride to the school by placing second in the island’s district two maths competition.
The competition took place Friday morning at the Castries Comprehensive School and was called the “Whiz Quiz”. It featured two representatives from each school.
Grade six teacherGason Eugene told The VOICE that he selected two of the school’s best candidates to compete. Eugene said preparation for the competition was challenging to get the children up to competing level.
In the end, he said, he was confident that the students would have made the school proud which they did indeed. “As a matter of fact, I consider them to be winners because they were tied with the winning school and they had to break the tie which is why they placed second”.
The Camille Henry School walked away with the top prize.
Eugene said victories like this cause the children to become more confident as seeing their school being recognised they believe that they too can achieve the victories in all areas of their studies.
TyishaCadette and Noah Harrison are the two Methodist students who took part in the competition. The two ten year olds expressed their joy of winning.
Cadette said; “I never thought I’d come second because it’s not my favourite subject but still I’d like to thank God and my mother. I’d also like to thank Mr. Eugene, the school staff and the principal”.
Harrison added; “It was great. It was a little difficult but I knew what to do, I knew the rules and everything else thanks to Mr. Eugene, the staff and the principal.
The month of November is dedicated to the Mathematics subject.
