COVID-19 Blamed for Impotence in Saint Lucian Men

It was one of the more frequently asked questions by men in the wake of the vaccine roll-out and continues to be the dominant question to this day.

Is the vaccine going to affect my sex life?

During the mobile community vaccination drives, nurses would often take the microphone in an effort to dispel rumours and that question was one of those that received a thumping, no.

However, one question that was hardly asked to the professionals was, would contracting COVID-19 render a man impotent?

Local pharmacies around the island have recorded a significant increase in prescribed Viagra to men who have admitted that since recovering from COVID-19, their sex life has suffered considerably.

According to one gentleman who spoke with this media house, “since my bout with COVID-19, I’ve had difficulties keeping an erection.”

The individual, who declined the use of his name and likeness in this publication remembered being diagnosed with the virus and having to spend a number of days isolated away from his family.

“I still don’t know where or how I caught the virus”, he said. “The day I finally decided to get vaccinated I felt a bit fluish and when I lost my sense of smell, I knew it was COVID”.

Joe said after it was confirmed that he did in fact contract the virus, it took him three days before he regained his sense of smell. It would however, take him a few days after receiving the news that he was COVID free, that he would realize what he considers to be his worse nightmare.

“I was told I am free from COVID-19 and I still gave myself a few weeks to get my body right, but something just wasn’t right,” Joe revealed. “No matter what I tried it just wasn’t happening. That’s when I decided to visit the doctor and he prescribed Viagra.”

Pointing to studies done by Senior researcher and Director of the reproductive urology program at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy, “the virus affects the blood vessels that supply the penis, causing erectile dysfunction, the blood vessels themselves malfunction and are not able to provide enough blood to enter the penis for an erection.”

Ramasamy in his report also gave a harrowing revelation saying “we don’t think this is a temporary effect. We think this could be permanent.”

According to one local pharmacist, the rate at which the erectile dysfunction medication has been moving, Joe isn’t the only man to be suffering from an under reported after effect of COVID-19.
