THE Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Inc. will host one of its most prestigious events for 2020 tonight. The Association’s annual Awards Ceremony unfolds under the theme, “The Time is Now, Let’s Do it Together”, at the Bay Gardens Marina Haven Hotel from 7.00 p.m. The highlight of the three-hour event will be the announcement of the Junior and Senior Male and Female Footballers for the Year 2019.
According to the SLFA, close to 125 individuals are expected to attend the ceremony where several players and administrators will be recognized. Also in attendance will be SLFA President Lyndon Cooper and the entire executive; Minister for Youth Development and Sports, Edmund Estaphane; representatives from the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee and the National Lotteries Authority; nominees/awardees and specially invited guests including representatives from all 19 affiliates of the SLFA and sponsors.
The Ministry for Youth Development and Sports recently released the names for the nominees for 2019 – 2020 sports awards to the media. Leading the charge for the top spot for football, Vino Barclette (goalkeeper) will battle it out with Johnson Charles (cricket); Albert Reynolds (athletics) and Karim Sifflet (martial arts) for the Senior Male Sportsman for the Year award.
With Vino Barclette already mentioned as the winner for the Senior Male Footballer for the Year by the SLFA, there will be some tense moments throughout the evening’s session especially for the Junior Male and Junior and Senior Female Footballer for the Year nominees as the winner has not yet been disclosed by the SLAA. High on the SLFA cards in terms of performances for 2019, are the likes of Keegan Caul and Krysan St Louis, who are most likely to repeat last year’s performance when they captured the Junior Male and Female Footballer for the Year” awards.
Other awards to be presented on the night include – Administrators of the Year; Club and League of the Year; Coach of the Year – Club and League; The Lifetime Award; Referee of the Year; The Brian Mc Donald Media Appreciation Award and the Cooperative Partners Appreciation Award.
For those in attendance there will also be a reflection on the tremendous contributions made to football within Marchand and its environs by former youth football coach Cassius Glasgow, affectionally known as “Cassie Boom” who was murdered on Monday 6th January 2020 at his residence in Cedars.
