UNDER humid conditions day 1 can best be described as “quiet” at the Beausejour Cricket Ground yesterday as the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports / Ministry of Education staged its most talked about event, the Inter Secondary Schools track championship.
The day started with the 80m dash for under – 14’s for boys / girls, followed by the 100m, for under16’s, 18’s and over 18’s, boys and girls. A number of the island’s leading sprint and middle distance athletes were in action just before the lunch time break.
The likes of Julien Alfred, Rochelle Etienne and KamillahMonroque all qualified for the semi rounds in the 100m and 1500m.

At least 13 schools arrived late at the BCG for their opening event that was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. A brief meeting was held to iron out the issue and by all indication the organizers accepted the various apologizes put forward by the Physical Education Teachers representing the various schools that faulted the 9.30 a.m. start and allowed the athletes that miss their events to compete.
Meanwhile, there was yet another major technical hitch in the secretariat. Just before going to press yesterday as there were no final results for the events the athletes participated in.
The championship resumes on tomorrow at the BCG with a series of preliminary, semi final and final events. Today is a rest day.
