MEMBERS of Saint Lucia’s national Under-19 cricket team returned home to an official welcome Monday evening, an event put on by the Department of Youth Development and Sports.
In their third and final game of the tournament, the Saint Lucians defeated Saint Vincent and the Grenadines by 7 wickets. Left arm orthodox spinner Simeon Gerson picked up a 7 wicket haul as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was bowled out for 63 runs.
In reply, Saint Lucia made 149 before being bowled out.
In the 2nd innings, Saint Vincent were bowled out for 185.
Needing only 99 runs to win, Saint Lucia coasted to 100 for the loss of 3 wickets.
Following their arrival at the George F.L. Charles airport the team was congratulated for their determination and commitment by Minister responsible for Youth Development and Sports Honourable Edmund Estephane.
Estaphane said, ”The Government and people of Saint Lucia are proud of what you have achieved and maintaining a high standard of cricket at youth level within the Windward Islands. Retaining this title is a very good feat,”
Julian Charles, President of the National Cricket Association and Director of Cricket West Indies commended the young cricketers for their efforts in Grenada and encouraged all the players to keep their interests in the sport.
Manager Tyrone Harris, captain Johnnel Eugene spoke on behalf of the team.
Three Saint Lucian players were chosen to represent the Windward Islands in next month’s West Indies under-19 cricket tournament scheduled for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. They are Johnnel Eugene, Kimani Melius and left arm orthodox spinner Simeon Gerson who bagged 17 wickets and was named Saint Lucia’s Most Valuable Player.
In both of their previous matches, Saint Lucia achieved draws.
In their second match versus Grenada, Saint Lucia bowled out the home team for 226 in the first innings and made 212 all out in reply.
In the 2nd innings, Grenada got to 171 for 3.
In their first match versus Dominica, Saint Lucia bowled out the Dominicans for 198 and replied with 173 all out in the first innings.
In the second innings, Dominica managed 145 for 9.
