THE NOVA Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, featured glaringly at its commencement ceremony for June 2016, Leonard Terrance of St. Lucia.

If the name evokes familiarity it is definitely because you have heard of the former Boys Training Centre Director (who served from 2009 to 2015), and who has been the Deputy Director of The Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) since October 2015.

Terrance now adds most suitably to his reputable ranks, a Master’s of Science Degree with a Major in Criminal Justice and a Specialization in Child Protection and Juvenile Justice which he completed this year with the NOVA Southeastern University.

Amidst a humble disposition and unassuming persona, the demure Terrance is quite fervent about his field. He has a long-standing career in Education and as a UWI qualified teacher, worked tirelessly with young people at the Ciceron Primary school from 1990 to 2006.

Terrance’s interactions with the youth and his conviction to catalyze progressive social change resulted in his pursuit and fruitful acquisition of a B.Sc. Degree in Criminal Justice as well as an Associate’s Degree in Applied Criminal Justice with a specialization in Law Enforcement from Cameron University in Oklahoma USA, in 2005.

“Do you really, honestly love what you do? It seems like a mammoth undertaking,” Leonard’s response is an overwhelming and prompt affirmative. He believes that one must embody and personify the core values of the task: the mantra of a true soldier on a mission.

Since completion of his studies at NOVA, the Ciceron resident has graduated from the Regional Security System (RSS) Staff and Command Course, has completed the Intermediate level course in Human Trafficking from the Caribbean Regional Drug Law Enforcement Training Centre (REDTRAC) in Jamaica and the Close Protection course with the Royal St. Lucia Police Force.

His mission of self- inspired professional development charges on as he is currently completing his final Criminal Justice proposal for full certification in ‘Youth in Custody’ to gain him admittance as a fellow at the Georgetown University in Washington DC.

The father of two continues to add even more widespread knowledge and academic merit to his already solid experience base and expresses an interest in pursuing studies in Criminal Justice Policy, International Corrections Management and Offender Rehabilitation as well as International Law (Conflict and Crisis Resolution) or Forced Migration and Human Trafficking. He laments how very real and present these seemingly abstract or seemingly remote themes are. However, his disheartenment exists not to stir passivity.

Leonard Terrance appreciates and applauds for his success since the inception of his academic journey, his beloved and deceased mother Helene Terrance and wife Lisa Sargusingh-Terrance.
