Ciceron Secondary Tops National Science Fair

For years, schools across Ciceron and throughout Saint Lucia have worked diligently to improve students’ understanding of Mathematics. While many students can solve equations and complete exercises in the classroom, they often struggle to see how mathematical concepts apply to real-life situations—especially during emergencies and natural disasters. As a result, Mathematics is sometimes viewed as abstract and disconnected from the realities of everyday life.

In a region that is vulnerable to hurricanes, floods, and other natural hazards, understanding how Mathematics supports disaster preparedness and response is more important than ever. Calculating wind speeds, estimating rainfall, interpreting weather graphs, managing resources, planning evacuation routes, and analyzing damage reports all require strong mathematical reasoning. Yet, students are rarely given the opportunity to explore these practical applications in an engaging and meaningful way.

To address this gap, the Mathematics Department and a team of students have developed an innovative online initiative known as the Mathematics Disaster Management Online Program. This dynamic platform is designed to teach students the relevance of Mathematics in real-life disaster management situations. Rather than learning formulas in isolation, students explore how mathematical concepts are applied before, during, and after disasters.

Beyond traditional instruction, this program serves as an interactive and self-paced learning tool that can be accessed anywhere with a computer and internet connection. It features realistic case studies, instructional videos, educational songs, interactive games, and evaluation exercises that reinforce key concepts. Students are guided through scenarios where they must apply skills such as percentages, ratios, statistics, measurement, graph interpretation, and algebraic reasoning to solve problems that mirror real disaster situations.

This project won the hearts of the judges and the school won the following prizes:

  • First place in Science and Technology Secondary School Category
  • Award for Best Innovative project
  • Motiellal Singh Award for the Best Science and Technology project
  • Best Overall Project

The Ciceron Secondary School has won in the Science and Technology Secondary Category for the third time in a row making the entire school body very proud. The project team would like to thank the staff and students of the school who helped them along their journey. They would like to implement their project to not just their school but other schools throughout the island and region.
