HIA Upgrades: Enhancing Emergency Access and Operational Efficiency

Recent efforts have focused on upgrading Hewanorra International Airport (HIA) to better serve the growing demands of passengers and improve operational management.

The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) is at the forefront of implementing these essential rehabilitation projects.

A key feature of the upgrades is the construction of a new two-lane access road, significantly improving emergency response capabilities for crash, fire, and rescue teams. This modern roadway replaces the older, narrower route, ensuring quicker and safer access during critical situations.

Additional enhancements include the installation of new asphalt and concrete apron pavements, rehabilitation of an aircraft parking stand, and optimizations within the terminal to streamline passenger movement. These improvements aim to bolster safety, efficiency, and overall airport capacity, catering to increased air traffic and service quality.

“This upgrade represents a practical step forward in enhancing both safety and day-to-day operations at the airport,” Amy Charles, Senior Manager – Airports stated.

She further emphasized, “With improved access now in place, our fire and rescue teams are better positioned to respond quickly and efficiently, thus strengthening our overall state of emergency preparedness.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to safety, SLASPA has completed the new two-lane access road for emergency teams, marking a substantial advancement in operational readiness and airfield safety. This upgrade transforms the previous single-lane access route into a more efficient pathway for emergency response, highlighting SLASPA’s focus on preparedness.

The former single-lane roadway had posed operational challenges, particularly during time-sensitive emergencies.

In response, SLASPA engaged in extensive planning and consultation to devise the best solution. The new roadway allows for improved traffic flow and ensures seamless access to the airfield, ultimately reducing response times and enhancing operational readiness.

This initiative is part of a broader phased redevelopment project (HIARP) aimed at transforming HIA into a modern regional hub.

Key upgrades and project components planned for 2025–2026 include:

– Two-Lane Access Road: Enhancing emergency response times and safety for emergency vehicles.

-Terminal Redevelopment (Packages 2 & 3): Plans for a new three-story terminal building are underway, with construction contracts expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2026.

– Air Traffic Control Tower: Construction has resumed on a new 100-foot, state-of-the-art control tower featuring advanced air traffic management systems, replacing a 50-year-old facility.

– Airside Upgrades: These will include new asphalt and concrete apron pavements, upgraded lighting, and infrastructure to support new passenger boarding bridges. – Operational Enhancements: Interim upgrades include remodeled immigration booths, additional restrooms, and expanded security checkpoints to improve passenger flow, as reported in early 2024.

Overall, this comprehensive project aims to elevate HIA’s capacity to accommodate larger aircraft and increase tourist arrivals, with construction anticipated to continue through 2026–2027.

SLASPA extends its gratitude to all stakeholders and partners involved in the successful completion of these vital projects.
