Global Recycling Day: Community E-Waste Drop-Off Initiative in Saint Lucia

.

In celebration of Global Recycling Day, Saint Lucia is taking action with a Community E-Waste Drop-Off initiative at Anse La Raye. This event is organized under the Integrated E-Waste Management Project, which aims to bring recycling directly to the community.

On Saturday, March 14, the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority (SLSWMA), in collaboration with Greening the Caribbean Inc. (GtC), will host a Community E-Waste and Aluminum Cans Drop-Off Event. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Anse La Raye Playing Field.

This initiative coincides with Global Recycling Day, a worldwide event that emphasizes the importance of recycling in preserving natural resources and protecting the environment. This drop-off event is the second coordinated by GtC under the Integrated E-Waste Management (IEWM) Project, supported by IDB Lab and implemented in partnership with the SLSWMA.

The project is designed to develop sustainable, community-managed systems for the collection and processing of electronic and other waste streams across Saint Lucia.

Global Recycling Day, themed : “Don’t think waste, think opportunity,” serves as a reminder that every community plays a role in fostering a cleaner, more sustainable world.

Residents of Anse La Raye are encouraged to bring their used electrical and electronic items for responsible disposal. Accepted items include phones, laptops, tablets, computers, printers, microwaves, irons, fans, blenders, air fryers, speakers, cameras, cables, batteries, keyboards, and other small appliances. Additionally, aluminum cans will be collected.

Important Note:

Bulky e-waste will NOT be accepted at this event. Residents are advised not to bring large household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, stoves, or large televisions.

A practical guideline: if you can carry it in, we can take it. As an incentive, participants will receive tokens for every drop-off and have the chance to enter a prize draw.

Prizes, sponsored by Massy Stores, will be drawn throughout the day. This event is made possible through the support of a valued network of community and institutional partners.

Massy Stores is the principal prize sponsor, while Invest Saint Lucia and the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) provide crucial institutional backing to bring initiatives like this to fruition.

The Anse La Raye Constituency Council, The Anse La Raye Facilities Management Committee, The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), and the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment have all played instrumental roles in championing the community aspect of this work, ensuring that environmental responsibility reaches every household. Greening the Caribbean (GtC) is an environmental solutions firm based in Saint Lucia.

GtC designs and implements integrated waste management systems to help small island developing states reduce landfill dependency and transition toward circular, climate-smart practices. The Integrated E-Waste Management (IEWM) Project is one of GtC’s flagship initiatives, supported by IDB Lab and delivered in collaboration with the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority.
