West Indies Seek to Reclaim Lost Glory in Kolkata

.

As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 kicks off today, the West Indies face Scotland in their opening match, scheduled for 5:30 a.m.

Expectations are high, with fans eagerly anticipating the Caribbean team’s return to top form. Ten years after their last world title, the West Indies return to Kolkata, the site of their 2016 T20 World Cup final triumph.

Once pioneers of the T20 format, they now confront a landscape that has evolved significantly, leading to a decline in their stature. The poignancy of their return is palpable, particularly as they arrive in Kolkata, where they once shaped the game.

Yet, a beacon of hope remains in the form of Daren Sammy, who, having captained the team to victory in 2016, now serves as head coach. For Sammy, Kolkata holds a special significance.

“Kolkata is always a good place to go to,” he reflects. “Anytime I’m feeling down, I go straight to Eden Gardens.” His resolve is not just rooted in nostalgia; he sees similarities between the current squad and the championship-winning team of 2016, noting a blend of experience and youth coupled with a shared determination to prove the doubters wrong.

“It feels the same,” Sammy asserts, acknowledging that many may be writing them off once again.

While West Indian players remain among the most sought-after in T20 leagues worldwide, the national side has struggled with consistency.

Since Sammy’s tenure as captain, the team has seen ten different captains—five full-time—and managed only one semi-final appearance. Selection has frequently hinged on availability rather than form, leading to a lack of continuity. The maroon shirt has transformed into just one of many commitments for players, with national contracts and match fees lagging behind the lucrative pay offered by international leagues.

A notable example is Nicholas Pooran, who retired from international cricket at just 29 to secure his financial future.

Can the West Indies rekindle excitement among their regional fans? Is a new beginning on the horizon? Only time will tell as the Windies prepare to battle for this prestigious global title.
