On Sunday, November 16, government ministers, technocrats, hospital staff, contractors, and community supporters gathered for the official handover ceremony of Saint Jude Hospital, celebrating the completion of reconstruction works and the hospital’s transition to full operational readiness.
The need to reconstruct Saint Jude Hospital arose from years of structural deterioration and functional limitations within the facility. The project aimed to modernize healthcare delivery but encountered challenges such as funding delays, logistical issues, and the complexity of upgrading ageing infrastructure while maintaining essential medical services. This ceremony was not just about unveiling a physical structure; it represented the successful culmination of years of strategic planning, perseverance, and collaboration designed to strengthen Saint Lucia’s healthcare system.
The reopening of Saint Jude Hospital symbolizes renewed hope for a healthier future and a reinvigorated confidence in the nation’s ability to provide world-class medical services.
In his keynote address, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre asserted, “When we took office in 2021, we vowed to return St. Jude Hospital to its rightful home. Today, on November 16, we have not only fulfilled this promise but delivered on it with pride.”
PM Pierre emphasized, “Our government’s role was to establish an environment where excellence thrives, where our doctors and nurses have what they need, and where the systems are robust and the foundation is solid. We have tackled the obstacles head-on, secured the essential resources, and delivered a facility deserving of the community it serves.
“To the people of Vieux Fort, you have waited long enough. You have carried this burden with remarkable patience and resilience. Today, we return to you what has always rightfully belonged to you: a hospital you can call home.
“Promise Made, Promise Kept, Promise Delivered!”
