The Ministry of Education, under the directives of Shawn Edward, on Tuesday, February 7, collaborated with Monroe College to launch the First Generation Scholarship Programme. Fifty young Saint Lucians were granted full scholarships to pursue university degrees at Monroe College in a range of academic disciplines.

Education Minister Shawn Edward also announced that the Ministry is expected to roll out another 50 First Generation Scholarships later this year. These initiatives are being taken to motivate the youth in the educational sector as they are the country’s future and will help bring significant changes in Saint Lucia.

Edward expressed special thanks to Prime Minister Philip J Pierre and Monroe College President Marc Jerome for this partnership. “Congrats to all recipients. We are committed to having one university graduate per household,” added the Minister.

A small gathering event was also hosted by the Ministry of Education to celebrate this partnership; glimpses of the event were shared by Edward on his official Facebook account.

As the Minister of Education, Edward is keen to help every student on island to complete their education. He thinks that no student should be deprived of chasing his/her goals because of financial conditions.

Last month, he announced the return of the Cuba-Saint Lucia Bi-lateral Scholarships programme after an absence of two years. He engaged with the cohort of students who will leave Saint Lucia for Cuba later this month to pursue their medical degrees.

“Our government remains committed to having one university graduate per household. Our government remains committed to supporting our students on their educational journey,” highlighted the Minister of Education. – via WIC.
