Saint Lucia’s National Senior Men’s football team secured an emphatic 5-2 victory over Bermuda in the ongoing CONCACAF Nations League championships, bouncing back after a narrow defeat to Barbados.
On Monday, the Piton Boyz arrived energized and determined, delivering an exciting performance that thrilled the local fans.
With head coach Rajesh Latchoo at the helm and captain Terrel Thomas leading by example, the team had worked diligently to assess their previous game and identify areas for improvement. Kegan Caull emerged as the standout player, scoring a hat-trick after impressing as a substitute in the earlier match.
The Piton Boyz demonstrated relentless offensive energy during their second Group B match at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground (DSCG) in Gros Islet. Caull netted his first goal in the 15th minute, followed by two more strikes in the 18th and 35th minutes, establishing a commanding lead. Bermuda managed to reduce their deficit just before halftime with a goal from Ajani Burchall in the 45+1 minute.
Caull’s exceptional skill paved the way for the team’s strong start, as he effectively countered Bermuda’s early advances with a header into goal from a corner kick. His second goal came from a well-executed solo run past the goalkeeper, while his third was a perfectly placed left-footer into the far right corner.
In the second half, Saint Lucia further extended their lead with goals from Shevon Byron in the 53rd minute and Kurt Frederick in the 68th minute. Bermuda added another through Riley Robinson in the 70th minute, bringing the final score to 5-2.
Despite Bermuda’s attempts to claw back into the match, Saint Lucia utilized their substitutes effectively to maintain control and thwart any resurgence from the visitors.
Following the match, Coach Latchoo expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing their desire to represent the nation positively after the earlier disappointment. “The players genuinely wanted to win—not just the staff and the SLFA—and that drive fueled our performance,” he stated.
Latchoo noted that the time spent training and playing together allowed the team to strengthen their on-field connections, leading to a more spirited and cohesive performance.
Reflecting on the previous match against Barbados, where the team lost 2-0 due to conceding two ‘soft goals’, Latchoo highlighted the importance of composure during critical moments and the need to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
As the Piton Boyz prepare for their upcoming game against Guadeloupe on Friday, October 3, in Barbados, Coach Latchoo remains focused on the primary goal: to secure maximum points in Group B and advance to the next stage of the tournament.
