Law enforcement officials have announced the execution of “targeted operations” in the Central Division as part of ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and illegal firearm activity across the island.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Luke Defreitas provided an update on a recent incident that occurred on Chaussee Road. On May 12, a joint operation involving the Gangs, Narcotics, and Firearms Unit (GNFU), supported by the Central Intelligence Unit, effectively tackled criminal elements within the city.
During the operation, officers confronted an armed suspect on Chaussee Road in Castries.
According to ACP Defreitas, “The suspect discharged multiple live rounds directly at duty officers, placing their lives in immediate danger. Officers responded with discipline and lawful restraint, narrowly avoiding serious injury or loss of life.”

In the course of this confrontation, a Glock 27 pistol was recovered and secured as evidence. This weapon, designed for close-range lethality, highlights the significant risks posed by individuals engaged in illegal firearm activities.
ACP Defreitas emphasized the growing concern over gun violence on the island, stating, “This incident comes amid a marked upsurge in gun violence, where criminal networks continue to traffic and use firearms with reckless disregard for public safety. The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force asserts that such attacks on officers are direct attacks on the nation’s security and will not be tolerated.”
The RSLPF has issued a serious warning: “Those involved in this incident are urged to surrender themselves to police custody immediately. Law enforcement will persist relentlessly in dismantling firearm networks and bringing offenders to justice. Let me caution offenders and other criminal elements not to use this event as a precedent.”
Additionally, the RSLPF crime chief noted that while the culprits may seem to have evaded the law, “this was in the interest of and the safety of the wider public. Under different circumstances, the outcome could have been much worse.”
ACP Defreitas praised the “courage and professionalism displayed by the officers,” emphasizing that their actions prevented a more serious incident. He reminded the public that the fight against gun violence requires vigilance, cooperation, and respect for the rule of law.
In other news , on May 12, police officers from the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit and the Central Intelligence Unit, conducted an operation at Anse La Raye. Officers executed a Warrant to Search Premises at the residence of Shaquan Hippolyte alias “Boyo” at Anse La Raye.
Shaquan Hippolyte was wanted on two Warrants of Arrest dated July 27, 2025 for the offences of Using a Firearm with Intent and Aiding and Abetting Robbery, which was committed in Soufriere. He was subsequently apprehended and remains in lawful custody pending further investigations and formal charges.
In a recent media briefing, RSLPF officials announced the implementation of a new strategic framework entitled the Strategic Plan 2026 to 2030. This initiative aims to modernize police operations, enhance responses to threats, and strengthen public trust. While specific details are still forthcoming, police officials indicate that the plan will focus on three key pillars: crime reduction, public trust enhancement, and institutional excellence.
The message is clear: the days of reactive policing are over. The new approach will be data-driven, forward-thinking, and aligned with national security goals.
ACP Dr. Mashama Sealy stated that the plan will roll out in phases, highlighting that crime requires a smarter, more coordinated response. “Key priorities will include increasing police visibility, community engagement, intelligence policing, and digital transformation,” she noted.
The strategic plan will also involve reviewing legislative policies, procedures, software systems, and equipment, while establishing compliance measures, quality assurance, and monitoring systems. This initiative aligns with Saint Lucia’s broader national security goals, ensuring that policing efforts are integrated into a comprehensive framework aimed at safeguarding citizens and maintaining public order.
Furthermore, ACP Sealy announced that police officers across the island will receive training in various critical areas, including criminal investigations, anti-money laundering, human trafficking, sexual offences, as well as human rights and humanitarian law. Additional focus areas will encompass leadership, supervisory management, data collection and analysis, and station management.
