NIC Clarifies Requirements for Sickness Benefit Claims

.

The National Insurance Corporation (NIC) has issued a statement this week to clarify the eligibility requirements for Sickness Benefit.

According to Regulation 29 of the National Insurance Corporation Act and Regulations, “Sickness benefit shall be payable to an insured person who is rendered temporarily incapable of work as a result of a specific disease or physical or mental disablement that is not due to an employment injury, nor caused by the habitual use of alcoholic liquor, narcotics, or drugs that are not prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.”

The NIC has said that it often receives medical certificates that refer to social, personal, or family circumstances instead of a specific disease or disabling condition.

As a result, the NIC emphasizes that claims referencing social, personal, or family circumstances will not be eligible for sickness benefits. The Corporation is dedicated to fairly assessing all claims in accordance with the relevant Act and Regulations.
