Blindness Awareness Month 2026 Calls on Saint Lucians to Move “From Awareness to Action”

.

The St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA) is observing Blindness Awareness Month 2026 under the theme: “From Awareness to Action: Empowering Inclusion and Expanding Opportunity.”

This year’s observance places strong focus on the role every Saint Lucian can play in creating a more inclusive society for persons living with blindness or vision impairment. The month-long campaign will encourage greater understanding, meaningful action, and equal opportunities in education, employment, accessibility, and community life.

Throughout the observance, a series of activities will engage students, employers, service providers, community partners, and the wider public. Planned activities include school-based Braille reading sessions, eye screening initiatives, accessibility discussions, employer engagement workshops, public awareness programmes, and empowerment activities for students with visual impairments.

The observance will also highlight the importance of assistive technology, personal safety, independence, and community support in improving quality of life and expanding participation for persons living with blindness and visual impairment.

President of the St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association, Glen Simon, emphasized that the observance also seeks to encourage greater attention to eye health and early detection.

“Though this month the call is made louder for increased awareness and inclusion for people living with blindness and low vision, we are also advocating for the prevention of blindness and the preservation of sight. Get your vision tested today to know your eye health status. The SLBWA is here to serve you,” Simon stated.

Blindness Awareness Month 2026 is not only about raising awareness, but also about inspiring action. The Association is calling on businesses, schools, organisations, families, and individuals to help remove barriers and create environments where everyone can participate fully, independently, and with dignity.

The public is encouraged to support the activities throughout the observance and become active partners in building a society that values inclusion, accessibility, respect, and opportunity for all.
