Talk is cheap but doesn’t change the price of cocoa, tea or coffee

Frequently when I read, especially social media comments, and hear various points of view, it makes me wonder if some people have so-many suggestions and opinions about everything, why we are as we are, as a people.

I often wonder why all the people with opinions and fix-it solutions don’t participate in the changes necessary for our island’s growth and support improvement initiatives.

Every other person is an ideas specialist who knows why crime is at its highest peak, what the government of the day needs to do, what our educational systems should aim to achieve and why there is so much unemployment etc. But regardless of all the expert opinions you do not see them participate in any organization to ensure such positive ideas are implemented.

The political opposition, gives a million reasons why this Saint Lucia government should be changed, the government on the other hand gives a million reasons why people should not return the opposite side back into office — and everyone believes the cost of living is as it is because of bad governance.

Employees call foul, everyone thinks they are underpaid, but given a chance to run a business they also follow the same pay traits and existing trends. Some choose not to find gainful employment but still want money without effort. They don’t believe in the biblical statement that says “by the sweat of thy brow one should eat bread.”

Deceitfulness is the order of the day, bluff and scams are rampant, stealing of all types is on the rise and every mother professes that her arrested or executed son was an angel and never participated in negative behavior.

We want the state to continue offering handouts, absorb the cost of Christmas barrels, keep subsidizing gas in the homes and at the pumps, but offer to remove VAT for everything and only then the government will be considered good.

If you add a tax or there is a hike in service of any type, they all call foul. Not even NIC payments they want to contribute to, even though they may profit from it in their old age.

Begging is rampant, everybody consistently wants a free something, be it drink or food, or a free ride. But, in return, nobody wants to contribute to anything.

In my youth growing up it was common to organize home parties where the men would supply the drinks and the ladies cook or supply the food, but today it is come with no inputs.

When one is sick no more hospital or home visits like before, but when you have passed away, everyone expects the family to have a blocko in your memory.

Today, If you need to borrow some cash because of your needs, all friends and family have a reason not to be supportive.

No more help for anybody. If you cannot pay for help, you are left in the cold.

There are a lot of cold hearted people, non-supportive and negative people — a lot of what we call “souceres” and freeloaders, bad talkers and persons whose only job is to watch and mind your business and “malpalay” you.

Nothing you do is good enough for them, everything you do is wrong, and they will not support you in anything you do. Yet they think that only them have the answers for all problems.

How can we progress with that type of vicious attitude? Not even the efforts of persons who contributed in the past they care to acknowledge.

So, I ask again: Why have we become who we are?
